Half full

It's almost impossible to watch any news and not be worried about the fate of the country.  But maybe things are not really so bad.  America is not its (dysfunctional) government or its toadying journalists and press. Maybe liberty is on the move. My personal political philosophy has always been strongly libertarian.  That's small "l" libertarian.  Many writers from Jefferson to Heinlein have pointed out that there are really only two political groups.  Statists, lovers of governments and individualists.

Political tags–such as royalist, communist, democrat, populist, fascist, liberal, conservative, and so forth–are never basic criteria. The human race divides politically into those who want people to be controlled and those who have no such desire. The former are idealists acting from highest motives for the greatest good of the greatest number. The latter are surly curmudgeons, suspicious and lacking in altruism. But they are more comfortable neighbors than the other sort. (Heinlein)

The GOP Is Dying Because The Liberty Movement Is Thriving.  Good summary of how the media distorts the ideas of the day and presents a false picture.  And, a reminder that big government Republicans are no better than Democrats.

Liberty is the absence of government interference.  It has to be a live and let live attitude.  Dems want to control guns.  Republicans want to control drugs

Guns are indeed potentially dangerous.  But if you embrace the idea of individual freedom and responsibility you must embrace an individual's freedom to choose.  Gun Sales Surge: Smith & Wesson Announces Sales +48%.  In addition, over 2/3 ( 68.6%) of the US population lives in
"Right To Carry" (Vermont, Alaska, Arizona) and 38 "Shall Issue" states.  Is there any other marker so clear as to the preeminence of the individual over the collective as the individual Second Amendment right?

Drugs are indeed potentially dangerous.  But if you embrace the idea of individual freedom and responsibility you must embrace an individual's freedom to choose.  Pot legal in Washington and Colorado

Even a squishy liberal Republican from NJ can see the future. Chris Christie Vetoes Obama Care Exchange In New Jersey.

Even the hard core blue state voters of Michigan can see the failure of the blue model and union thugocracy  Michigan Legislature Passes Right-to-Work Law.  This will make them the 24th Right to Work state in America.

CBS News: Egypt’s president offers nothing to defuse crisis.  As we watch the Syrian dictator struggle to survive, and the Egyptian would-be dictator run from an angry mob,
and as we think back to the many fallen dictators of the recent past – Gorbachev, Ceausescu, Pinochet,  and their numerous ilk– we might well ask ourselves two questions: Why does that job look so good?

And why do so many intellectuals cozy up to the dictators?

Machiavelli knew that tyrannies were the most unstable form of government, while republics were the longest-lived.

Zimmerman Sues NBCNEWS... Made me into a Racist to Fix Low Ratings. Punching back twice as hard.  It's the only thing they understand.

And finally, proof that God does have a sense of humor. Rotting Whale Casts Foul Stench Into Malibu.   A dead whale rotting near the Malibu homes of Barbra Streisand, Bob Dylan and other celebrities is causing a gigantic cleanup problem.   Our celebrity friends are big believers in government.  Government is the solution to all our problems.  Except (as usual) government does not like to deal with the messy stuff.
The Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors was not responsible for disposing of the more than 40-foot body, said Carol Baker, who represents the agency.

"It's on a private beach" controlled by homeowners down to the high tide line and the state is responsible for the tidelands, Baker said.

  1. "Machiavelli knew that tyrannies were the most unstable form of government, while republics were the longest-lived."

Why has our REPUBLIC allowed us to embark on the path of TYRANNY. I have, at least, one answer but I'd like to see what others think.

I thought Michael Moore was in Venezuela. Now we find out he is in California.

  3. I participated in an after-the-election phone survey of voters in Colorado. We were asking various questions, like: what was the most important reason you participated in the election, and: do you consider yourself liberal, moderate, or conservative? Everyone of the people I surveyed, who voted for Obama, described themselves as moderates.
The bar has moved so far left, that few Americans have any idea what real liberty looks like. For many years we have only had the choice between socialism and socialism "light." We can not be socialism "light" and beat socialism.

  5. An atheist, Penn Jillette said, "....If we’re compassionate, we’ll help them [poor people], but you get no moral credit for forcing other people to do what you think is right. There is great joy in helping people, but no joy in doing it at gunpoint.”
In this same context he said, "Voting for our government to use guns to give money to help poor and suffering people is immoral and self-righteous bullying laziness."
I say thank God for the curmudgeons who actually help people, and God save us from the self-righteous idealists....
